Realizing the connected car requires converging the aesthetic with wireless communications hardware. Like smartphones, car manufacturers design first and integrate after. This is why early autonomous vehicles were not attractive as manufacturers pursued plug and play solutions for mobile satellite communications and collision avoidance. It is not unusual for us to hear the frustrations shared by engineers within the auto industry, because they like most developers advocate a design in solution.

Decades ago, our core team has created conformal mobile satellite (MSAT) solutions for the defense and aerospace industries. Historically, adoption of MSAT integration has been slow because of cost considerations. The not so coincidental emergence of the smartphone, technological advances, and market demands have brought conformal solutions to the forefront. The question of cost is now a matter of which solution the manufacturer chooses to implement.

At WavCatcher, we advocate using printed circuit solutions to create the necessary aesthetic desired by the marketplace. From previous RFPs, we have designed both plug and play and integrated solutions for the interior cabin, terrestrial and MSAT communications. By working with the manufacturer, we can substantially reduce costs by eliminating extraneous components and metamaterials while achieving the desired performance parameters.

Unfortunately, most present day antenna design relies on the utilization of traditional antennas. This creates self imposed limitations.
